Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several approach shafts down to the depot... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," he said. "They were among thousands of British troops on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate terrorist threats who endanger our security, highlights how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."

During December, the US military conducted what it termed a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates Islamic State still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
