EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
