The mood at Lazio's home ground was far from happy during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a team that had let in a total of 10 goals while scoring only two in their last five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their most recent demonstration in a continuous dispute with club owner Claudio Lotito.
A Season Unraveling?
Had their campaign coming unstitched, or had there never been a binding element holding it together from the beginning? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as head coach in the summer transfer window, but then he to later acknowledge that the board had not mentioned the transfer ban they were set to be hit with for accounting issues. Speculation that he might quit were without basis, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "misled" him.
Lazio became as messy on the pitch as behind the scenes, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in their other opening fixtures, featuring the derby della Capitale. From one game to the next, it has been hard to determine if they are improving or collapsing.
The Youngster's Surprising Presence
A single player continued to smile amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to be at Lazio this year. He was on last season with Parma on loan and, at the start of the off-season, Lazio were advocating for him to stay there for another season. The signing restriction forced a rethink. The club couldn't risk to reduce their roster without replacements.
Cancellieri arrived in the first place under Sarri's first spell, then a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He made 20 matches in the league with the club in 2022-23, all but one of those coming off the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed at the end of that season, later stated Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential but then not selecting him."
Discovering His Natural Fit
It's possible the coach was still trying to identify the nature of Cancellieri's abilities. Billed as an attacking winger on arrival, Cancellieri instead found himself most of that campaign as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. Across 63 games while playing for Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
